Keiko ABE, Tatsuya MIMURA, Hiroshi AKITAKE and Kan-ichi MIMURAusing X ray images 23) . The assessment wasperformed while children stood straight on thePedoscope, with arms hanging loosely, lookingforward, and with both feet loading the equipmentequally. The footprints of both their feet were alsotaken by Pedoscope. Subjects from birth toapproximately one year cannot stand straight ontheir own, so their nursery teachers held them andhad them stand on a Pedoscope.Figure 2 displayed the methods of measuring theplantar arch. The plantar arches were classified intofive types: normal-arch feet, flat feet, bilateral rightfoot (BR: only right foot normal-arch feet), bilateralleft foot (BL: only left foot normal-arch feet), andhigh-arched feet (the plantar load separatescompletely between the front and the rear of thefeet 6,13) . In order to evaluate the feet of the subjects,we drew an internal tangent and an externaltangent of the foot. Then we drew another line, what is called H-line according to the Hirasawastudy 6) , connecting the intersection of the twotangents and the middle point of digitus secundus.Subjects who had their plantar arch crossing theH-line were classified as having flat feet.4.Motor ability testAmong the subjects, preschool children aged 4to 6.5 were engaged in three field-based physicalfitness tasks comprising 25m sprint, broad jumpand tennis ball throw. The children were toldto make maximal efforts. Meanwhile, schoolchildren aged 7 to 12 were engaged in three eventsof 50m sprint, broad jump and softball throw, alsoat maximal efforts.5.Statistical analysisOne-way analysis of variance was used to assessdifferences in sprint, jump, throwing abilities1 2 31 2 31Internal tangent2H-line3External tangentNormal-arch feetFlat feetHigh-arched feetFigure 2 Analysis of footprint? 169 ?
